The project addressing the future possibility of incarceration. This campus is aiming to provide an environment for inmates to turn their interests into skills; and turn skills into their expertises. Inmates will have the abilities to become a small business owner or even entrepreneur. For example, people who is interested in cooking will be able to learn the management of a restaurant; people who is interested in sports can become community coach. The principle is not to provide a simulation of real society but to become a part of it. This is a new vital node of Los Angeles to provide recreation, education and financial value to its community.
The measure of this campus take against America’s incarceration is to introduce subtle difference without violating inmates human rights and free will. The control points are introduced through circulation, landscape and program. In terms of program, staff’s apartment is always occupied and sandwiches in between resident’s floor level so no hierarchy is established. Circulation wise, open landscape holds no physical restriction to travel from building to building, yet the main driveway in the residential parcel only have two major entry and exit point. Finally, the landscape changes between residential area and non-residential area in order to create different atmosphere and spatial quality.
The site located at the heart of Los Angeles. The diagram identifies few important factors that will inform the master plan. First of all is the complex traffic system that includes LA river, metro and highway. Through these transportation systems, this this has the ability to become the gateway of ongoing development of downtown LA. Secondly are the developed areas the spread around the city including Chinatown, Lincoln Heights, Art District, Los Angeles and Echo park. These area of interests indicating the possible group that will benefit from the amenity which provided from the proposal. Thirdly are the educational institutes. Within ten minutes commute, this site can reaches three high schools and and two college institutes.
In this scheme, the public building has a more transparent material and the inmate;s residential buildings take on the accumulation of the colored brick.
The regional model is developed to study a consistent language that can contaminate both inmates' residential building and public amenity facility. The public facility building has more open aperture and colorful brick to serve as a differentiation than the residentail building.
This building prototype serves as the practicing incubator for inmate to learn and advance their interest, skill for entrepreneurship and small buiness.
The design of facade overturns the vernacular notion of the brick and suggest openness to local community. First floor is programmed as retail store and art studio. Second floor is the seminar room for both public and inmates to learn the skill, expereince and knowledge.
The campus applies a mentor system that inmates partnered up with specialized social worker to serve their program. Every residence have a common floor (the volume with glass curtain) for inmates to interact with their mentor.
The facade use the fragmentation of walls and apertures to suggest openness; dis-stabilize the notion of prison's aesthetic stats-quo.
Over the last decades, numerous projects have take on the theme of
kinetics feature. Buildings have always by-in-large being being still and static, yet with the involvement of contemporary culture, the kinetic aspects of implementation seem to be more and more feasible. In terms of culture, performance as a source of desire is fully embodied in the automobile industry, digital products and the consumer economy. In terms of material advancement, the physical
plausibility made possible with light, chemical-resilience and strong composite material.
The project aims to use kinetic genre as a generative device on contributing landscape and triggering emotion in specific context that the site can provide. Palm Spring is the hive of airbnb and vacation house. The duration of vacation usually spans very short amount of time. And the time that being spends is in quote of encapsulated experience(private oasis). Buildings are repeating itself every time with the change of tenant. This project is aiming to manage the special cycle and rhythm of Palm Spring through expressing kinetic feature.
The project downplays the mechanical expression and strays away from the tectonic identity of kinetic forms. Instead, it uses one of the key feature of the home, its pool, as the source for its movement. This changes the characteristic of the movement and also take a position on technology by constructing a more subtle boundary between space and user.

This building is an elevated mat project that creates urban organization both in reaction to city-scape and internal spatial organization. Studio, auditorium and classroom is organized to create interconnection so that the function of space, tectonic component and structure is able to enrich the architecture fabric.
The organization encourages individual, students and faculty gains new freedom of action through shuffled order which relates to Smithson’s essay on Mat-building that indicates the possibilities for change. Different than typical Matt Building, we purposefully isolate the body of academic space from actual urban fabric to secure the freedom of action. Meanwhile maintains engagement with city with Administration, fabrication shop and gallery. They serve as mediators between the main activity of school and the city. By taking advantage of the porosity, we can allow discrete program and urban attitude to co-exist.
The projects looks at the organization of discrete modules and how they cross-adjacent with each other to create a complex system of units. Voxel, module and frame all derives from an original agent yet they together assemble as an non-linear coherence without collapsing to each other. The project creates differentiation, both aesthetically and functionally through the manipulation of the formal relationship between discrete serial elements. The consistent application of internal rule sets allow for this differentiation to occur coherently without relying on legible methods of transformation.
